Make Your Current Job More Ideal
Many people I work with are stressed and frustrated in their existing job, and they naturally want to make it more satisfying and enjoyable. Don't panic if this is something you identify with, because you're not alone! This artcle gives you some tips and techniques to start to make the changes needed to help make your job more ideal.

Why your job isn't ideal
Your first step is to understand in detail which job tasks and duties are causing you stress and frustration. It could be things like too much travelling, too many meetings, repetitive work, or boring administration.

Once you've understood these, you can then list the specific interactions with work colleagues, bosses, customers and suppliers that are making it difficult for you to do your job. From all this information, you should have a very clear understanding of what is making your job less that ideal.

How would you like things to be
In this stage you first need to clearly articulate what changes to the above problems would bring about a less stressful and more enjoyable working day for you. Once you've done this you should also list everything (no matter how small!) that is working for you in your current job. This will remind you that it's not all bad!

Making your job ideal - external changes
Knowing what changes to your current job will make it ideal is only half the battle. You now need to make these changes a reality - some of which you will be able to do yourself, and some of which you may need support from your colleagues or boss to achieve. You may need to make structural changes to your job or you may need to enrich your job through more responsibility, challenge, achievement or recognition.

If you need help, think about talking to your boss with specific suggestions as to how you would do your job more effectively by making certain changes, not forgetting to demonstrate how those changes will also benefit your organisation.

Making your job ideal - internal changes
It's not just what you do that makes a job ideal, it's also about how you do it. To be happier in your job, and to really make it ideal, you will need to start to approach your job differently. There are many things you can do, any one of which will make a positive difference to you, your perception of your job, and what colleagues think of you.

You could be more positive in your demeanour and outlook, start to work more effectively with difficult colleagues and clients, communicate more clearly with colleagues, be a better team worker, improve your time management, preparation and prioritisation, or be more effective at delegating tasks. Choose one of the above and notice the difference!
